AICTE Sponsored Online Short Term Training Program on Recent Advances in Tribology and Surface EngineeringSponsored by All India Council for Technical Institution (AICTE) & Organised by Saintgits College of Engineering.

Saintgits College of Engineering have received a grant from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi under AQIS scheme to conduct a series of online Short Term Training Program (STTP) for faculty & research scholars of various institutes and organisations around the globe. The generic area of proposal is Recent Advances in Tribology and Surface Engineering

The program is scheduled now in the month of August, September, October and November 2020 as per directions from AICTE. Below you can see the detailed STTP series schedule.

Series STTP Title Dates
1 Introduction to Tribology and Surface Engineering 17-22 August, 2020
2 Tribology of Machine Components and Applied Tribology 14-19 September, 2020
3 Introduction to special topics like Nanotribology, Biotribology, Space tribology 12-17 October, 2020
4 Surface characterization and treatments in Tribology 23-28 November, 2020

Importance of tribology for sustainable reliability cannot be over emphasized. It is reported that loss due to improper understanding and application of tribology is over 1.5% of GDP of the developed countries like USA. We can well imagine the state of affairs in our country, where, awareness about importance, understanding and application of tribology is rather low. Tribological failures are responsible for over 40% of breakdowns in industries. Therefore, engineers working in the field need to have a thorough understanding of tribological practices, so that proactive measures can be implemented in place of traditional corrective and breakdown maintenance practices.

The vital subject of tribology does not get appropriate coverage in the engineering curriculum in our country. However, it is noted that the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Kerala has recently introduced TRIBOLOGY as an elective subject in the fifth semester of UG Mechanical Engineering curriculum (first initiative in the state of Kerala), which emphasizes the need and relevance of the subject in the course. Moreover, professional PG courses of different universities are offering the subject with highest priority as there is a strong need to promote the awareness of tribology among our industries and academia.

It is with this background that the Design Stream of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam is organizing the STTP series on Recent Advances in Tribology and Surface Engineering during, August, September, October and November, 2020 at our prestigious institution to reinforce the need for continued education in Tribology - an interdisciplinary science and technology of friction, wear and lubrication.

The program is intended to provide a National platform for interaction between renowned Tribologists of the country and the participants, comprising teaching professionals, research and PG scholars and practicing engineers from Indian industry. Also this program intends to identify the areas where current research is being focused and to promote its viability.
